RSC Editorial - January 2020

Catalina Alemany, Corporate Social Responsibility Director

Trust and dialogue have built our CSR

In recent years, RIU has experienced a period of major changes, in which we have implemented a new decision-making model for CSR which has been a priceless lesson for us all. If I had to summarise in a single word the fruit of these last twelve months, I would say it had to be TRUST.

The trust we have placed in our academic, our sustainability ambassadors and voluntary sector partners in this important period, the trust that our stakeholders have earned by discovering the importance of dialogue and long-term alliances, and the trust that we inspire in our customers by offering them more responsible holidays.

We are facing new challenges, such as improving some of the indicators in which our performance has not been satisfactory over the last year, or measuring the results of our projects and, above all, increasing our capacity to generate well-being in the local community.

These are not easy times, but we start from the privileged position of a job well done and with an unstoppable team, led by our sustainability ambassadors, we know that we will slowly but surely achieve the goals we set ourselves.

TESTIMONIALS FROM OUR AMBASSADORS

Xisca Sitjar

Riu Bravo hotel General Manager

“All RIU directors are aware of every drop of water we use. That’s why it is important for us to choose more efficient machinery and appliances, because they optimise the hotel’s energy and are kinder to the environment. This is the case with the washing machines that we use to wash items like drapes, net curtains, dishcloths and tablecloths, which have an A+++ energy efficiency rating.”

Francesca Vásquez

Riu Palace Mexico hotel General Manager

The whole hotel team is responsible for caring for the environment in which we work and we implement this by managing our waste carefully.
With the resources available, we created a personalised recycling programme to reduce consumption and reuse waste, adopting a practical and effective approach.
We knew it wouldn’t be easy, but we wanted to see how far we could go. Today, our waste management plan is one of the company’s most successful.

Pepa Pérez

Riu Don Miguel hotel General Manager

“At our hotel we try to do everything in our power to apply the ‘three Rs’ rule: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Over the course of the year, we have shown that various waste items can be reused or turned into something useful through two important events that take place at the hotel: The Sustainable Market on 5th June to mark World Environment Day, and the Pequeño Valiente fundraising market that we hold every Christmas.”

Bartolomé Ensenyat

Director of Purchasing at RIU Hotels & Resorts

“At RIU’s purchasing department, we have been evolving from the outset and are now more environmentally committed and aware than ever. When making decisions, we consider the social and environmental aspects of the product over its life cycle. For example, we take into account the product’s past, i.e., where it comes from, how it was produced or made, then its present, its transport, use and durability, and of course, the product’s future, its final destination, its management as waste and the impact it will have on the environment.”.
